So here is something nobody bothered to tell me about Las Vegas. Apparently we have a “locust season”. It comes around every 5 years and the city is overrun by grasshoppers. I found this out the hard way when I showed up in the parking garage at work. Upon exiting my vehicle I saw an odd pattern on the ground. This pattern was actually a carpet of grasshoppers. I started walking to the elevator and grasshoppers were jumping in front of me in a kind of frenzied way that resembled popcorn popping. I made it all the way to the elevator. The doors closed around me and when I looked up I was face to face with a cluster of the suckers. On the ride down they minded their own business so I did the same. Then I heard a sound like tapping on metal. I look up and there are grasshoppers above my head trying to come down through the metal grate in the ceiling.
I have never wished for an elevator ride to be over and be in the security of my office more than I did at that moment.
Nobody has yet been able to give me an approximate end date of this “locust season”. Wish me luck.
